How to Prepare for a General Surgery Consultation

A general surgery consultation does not automatically mean an operation is required. It is an opportunity for a surgeon to review symptoms, examine the patient and study available reports before explaining suitable next steps.

Before the appointment

  • Carry imaging, laboratory reports and earlier medical records
  • List current medicines, supplements and allergies
  • Write down previous operations or major medical conditions
  • Prepare questions about options, recovery and follow-up

After clinical assessment

The surgeon may recommend observation, additional investigation, non-surgical management or a procedure depending on the diagnosis. Decisions should be made with clear information about expected benefits and risks.
